A Tour of Samin Nosrat’s House and Studio Kitchens in Oakland

If you happen to, like me, had been completely charmed by Samin Nosrat’s whole-face smile and bottomless curiosity in her 2018 Netflix sequence Salt Fats Acid Warmth, you’ll be delighted to find that her dwelling kitchen in Oakland, CA, is as heat and joyful and unpretentious as she is.

The Chez Panisse-trained chef and meals author—her newest cookbook, Good Issues, was launched a pair months in the past—lives in a small cottage in an city compound of properties that share a courtyard (we featured the beautiful communal setup in our 2022 e book Remodelista: The Low-Affect House). Her galley kitchen is tiny. There’s no marble-topped island, no walk-in larder, no equipment storage, not even a full-sized fridge.

But—it’s right here, on this humble, compact house proper subsequent to the steps, the place she creates scrumptious dish after scrumptious dish, usually to feed family members. Her new e book, subtitled “Recipes and Rituals to Share With Folks You Love,” speaks to this core ethos: cooking could be an act of generosity, a present of your time and care and a focus. You don’t want a Lacanche vary to be a greater cook dinner or extra engaged good friend—just a few well-designed, sturdy instruments and a dedication to nourish your relationships.

Samin’s kitchen isn’t fancy, nevertheless it’s not missing in fashion. Removed from it. “Magnificence and utility is kind of my private design motto,” Samin tells us. Let’s take a tour—of each her cozy dwelling kitchen and her close by sparkling-new check kitchen.

I like all of the home windows, and the apron sink is gorgeous,” says Samin. The European-style dish rack within the nook was custom-made by Michael Mellon.
