Dorp Lodge in Cape City: A Love Letter

dorp hotel cape town reception

Our transatlantic flight was hours late, a dinner reserving was lengthy missed, and nerves had been frayed. Once we had been dropped on the door of Cape City’s Dorp Lodge, all the things modified. The evening was chilly but the welcome was heat. The kitchen was closed however dinner was served. Friends had been tucked of their rooms whereas the hearth in the lounge was nonetheless ablaze. Arriving on the Dorp was like slipping into snug garments and dialog with a longtime buddy.

In Afrikaans, the phrase Dorp interprets to “village.” Such is the Dorp Lodge. A welcoming hamlet nestled towards Sign Hill, it sits within the uppermost spot of the Bo-Kaap neighborhood identified for its brightly coloured and continuously Instagrammed diminutive homes.

The gathering of buildings and rooms really feel like they’ve been there perpetually. Every area and room is exclusive, and never in a cloying approach. It’s as if the resort organically grew over time with a storied historical past to accompany it—inhabited by convivial ghosts you’d need to meet. Surprisingly, the Dorp was constructed from the bottom up lower than a decade in the past, opening its doorways in 2019. The visionary behind it was Gail Behr, a legendary inventive drive in South Africa. Her contact and tenacity (and, some say, “trendy trickery”) created one thing that feels intimate, genuine, heat, and personality-rich. She has since handed, however her hand continues to be felt and her unique staff stays.

Not solely a spot you’ll need to go to, the Dorp Lodge delivers concepts and inspiration for creating magic indoors. It dares you to concern not and let your personal quirks and passions shine in your area.

“It’s not a resort, nor a home nor a pub. It’s as a substitute a type of oddballs membership …
You’ll know when you match the second you arrive
And when you don’t merely reverse down the drive …
We would like everybody to be comfortable or as comfortable as they are often.
And that applies to the workers right here and to me …”

– excerpt from “A Dorp Poem” by Gail Behr, the “inimitable creator of Dorp.”
